Joe Shaw made his debut for Sheffield United at the tender age of 16 in 1945. No one could have thought then that he would go on to make a record breaking 714 appearances for the Club, including 632 in the league, over the next 21 years. The influential centre half passed away in 2007.

Coggeshall Town FC, who played in the Essex & Suffolk Border League, were one of the most successful football clubs in the area during the 1960s and early seventies. Here there players (darker shirts) leave the field, on their home ground at The Crops, Braintree Road - either at the end of the league season or at the end of one of their successful cup matches - to the congratulations of their supporters and match opponents.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mersea Island FC were one of the two leading junior amateur football clubs in the north-east area, along with arch rivals West End United, of Colchester. Based at their ground at the Glebe, under manager Ron Hunt, a former Colchester United half-back, they won many local league and cup trophies and capped their success with the Essex Junior Cup in 1969-70.
