NEPAL Kathmandu -- 05 Dec 2009 -- Maoist propaganda posters featuring Marx, Mao,Stalin and Lenin. Thousands of these posters have been posted around Kathmandu. The Maoists are planning a series of demonstrations and declaration of various autonomous regions this December in yet another showdown with the government which took over in May 2009 after the then Maoist PM Prachanda resigned over a row with the president over who heads the Nepalese Army. The former rebels have been agitating to get more power or total state control since then, though so far without success -- Picture by Jon Mitchell / Lightroom Photos

Description
Contemporary World War One illustration of a cavalry charge by British troops in France. At the beginning of WW1 all of the combatant armies still retained substantial numbers of cavalry and there were a number of traditional cavalry actions in the opening battles of the conflict. Later, as the front lines stabilised, a combination of barbed wire, machine guns and rapid fire rifles proved deadly to mounted troops and horse cavalry units tended to be converted to infantry. By the end of the war cavalry had virtually no useful role left to play - the days of cavalry warfare had effectively been consigned to the history books. The image appeared in The War Illustrated periodical in May 1917. The artist was Stanley L Wood (1866 – 1928).
