He emigrated to the USA as a child and later built up Pittsburgh's Carnegie Steel Company which was later merged with other companies to form US Steel. In later life he used his vast fortune for philanthropic causes and he also built and owned the famous Carnegie Hall concert venue in Manhattan, New York City.
