Looking towards Ponte del Gaffuro which crosses the canal between Fondamenta Minotto and Fondamenta Gaffuro in Dorsoduro, Venice. This busy thoroughfare is close to the island road transport terminal at Piazzale Roma. Walking in step on the bridge two suited men with shaven heads look incongruous among the tourists and casually dressed locals.

In this novel by the French political philosopher and educationlist Rousseau (1712-1778), as an educational experiment the hero, Emile, is raised apart from other children. Here Emile is with the priest from Savoy who, as the author's mouthpiece, is propounding the Theology of Nature which assumes Man to be naturally good, contradicting the doctrine of Original Sin.

The Bridge of Sighs or Ponte dei Sospiri crosses the Rio del Palazzo and connects the Doge's Palace to the New Prison. Lord Byron coined the name "Bridge of Sighs" in the early 19th Century.

The Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Spinola in Genova, North West Italy. The museum collection includes artwork, furnishings, ceramics, silver, books and etchings which the marquis Paolo and Franco Spinola donated in 1958 to the Italian State together with the centuried family mansion of which the aforementioned constituted patrimony.

Tourists stroll by or relax at canal side cafes in Fondamenta Pontinello Sinistro in Burano. Burano is a small island located in the Venice Lagoon and a popular day trip in the Veneto. The island is easily assessable by valporetto (water bus) from Venice. Chief feature of Burano as well as shops and canals are its brightly coloured houses and quiet back streets. In the background of this photograph is Burano's leaning tower the Campanile of the church of San Martino.
