Washington, born a slave, was a leading figure in US race relations in the late 19th and early 20th century and the first teacher and principal of the Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama, a school for African-Americans. He wrote a best-selling autobiography entitled Up From Slavery (1901) as well as a string of other books and advised Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft on race relations. The Pit and the Pendulum (1843) story by Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) American poet and story writer, creator of the American Gothic story. The prisoner, condemned to death by the Inquisition, lies looking up at the pendulum armed with a scimitar blade which is swinging nearer his heart with each sweep. Franklin (1706 – 1790) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America and was one of the "Committee of Five" appointed by the Second Continental Congress to draft the Declaration of Independence. He is also remembered as a noted polymath who excelled at many things. He was an author, theorist, diplomat, statesman, printer, inventor and scientist and is particularly remembered for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity and his invention of the lightning rod. In this portrait he is pictured sitting at a desk, looking at an electrical device to his right and holding a quill pen in one hand and his notes in the other hand. Lightning can be seen striking a building through a window in the background. Engraving by Edward Fisher (1730 – circa 1785) based on a work by artist Mason Chamberlin (died 1787).

Portrait engraving circa 1849 of legendary English poet and playwright William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616), author of plays such as Hamlet, Macbeth and King Lear. The engraving by Samuel Cousins (1801 - 1887) is based on the famous "Chandos" portrait which is believed to have been painted from life between 1600 and 1610. It is named after James Brydges, 3rd Duke of Chandos, who was an early owner of the portrait, but it is not clear who painted it or even if it is definitely Shakespeare. Experts believe however that it does indeed depict the Bard.

UK SCOTLAND Dunbar -- 09 Oct 2010 -- A bust of John Muir ( 1838-1914 ) - arguably one of Dunbar's most famous sons. Although he moved to the United States when just aged 11, John Muir later went on to become one of the founding fathers of the modern environmental movement.
