Description
Brick tower (also known as Stourton Tower), at the north-western edge of the Stourhead Estate in Wiltshire. The banker Henry Hoare II (1705-1785), owner of Stourhead and creator of its famous garden, conceived the tower in 1762. Although the tower commemorates the battle of Ethandun in May 878, where the Saxon King Alfred the Great defeated the Danish army, it is believed that it was built in recognition of the end of the Seven Years War against France and the accession of King George III. The designer of the tower was Henry Flitcroft, the notable 18th century Palladian architect, and and is said to have been inspired by St Mark's Tower in Venice. Building took place between 1769 and 1772 and cost an estimated £5,000. The tower is 49m (160ft) high, and triangular, with round projections at each of the three corners. Witin one is a spiral staircase holding 205 steps to the top, where there is a platform with a crenellated parapet. The tower is constructed of red brick, with walls 84cm (2ft 9in) thick with and bricks set in a Flemish Bond (alternating header-stretcher-header-stretcher). Above the front door stands a statue of King Alfred, and a stone panel bearing an inscription.
