Description
Photo taken in 1873 of a group of Navajo Indians, possibly a family, next to a dwelling in Canon de Chelle (Canyon de Chelly), New Mexico Territory (now Arizona), near the old Fort Defiance. A squaw is weaving blankets on a native loom, a man is holding a bow and arrow in the foreground and an older man in the background is looking at the camera with apparent suspicion. The image, entitled "Aboriginal life among the Navajo Indians", was captured by Timothy H O'Sullivan (1840 - 1882) as part of the Wheeler Survey west of the 100th meridian. Authorised by the US Congress, the Wheeler Survey was a major survey of the southwestern United States in the late nineteenth century. It was tasked with making topographical maps of the area and also aimed to examine the geology and to discover the numbers, habits and disposition of Indians in the region. The Navajo, who refer to themselves as Diné ("the people") in their native language, are the second largest Native American tribe of Northern America.

Vintage photo circa 1926 showing a North American Cree Indian gathering moss. The image, entitled "Moss for the baby bags", was captured by Edward S Curtis (1868 - 1952) as part of his project "The North American Indian". Curtis took thousands of pictures of over 80 Indian tribes to be published in 20 volumes from 1907 - 1930 with the aim of documenting as much Native American Indian traditional life as possible before that way of life disappeared. Much of the material he obtained is the only recorded history of those times. This particular image appeared in Volume 18 and the exact location where the picture was taken is unknown. Plains Indians carried their babies in a bag made of hide and filled with dry moss - the bag was tied to a cradle board which in turn was tied to the mother's back.

Description
Portrait photo circa 1893 by Place & Coover of William Aeko. Aeko, a native of Honolulu, was a ukulele player and singer around the turn of the 20th century who helped to spread Hawaiian culture. He was one of the musicians who took part in the earliest known commercial mainland performance of Hawaiian music with the ukulele at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago (also known as The Chicago World's Fair). Aeko was one of a quartet of vocalists dubbed the Volcano Singers who accompanied themselves with Spanish guitars, five-string taropatch and ukulele as part of "The Kilauea Cyclorama" - so-called because it featured a re-creation of the Kilauea Crater in the Hawaiian islands. The ukulele, which roughly translates as "Jumping Flea", originated in the 19th century as a Hawaiian interpretation of a small guitar-like instrument brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants.

He famously reached the Americas on October 12 1492 - landing on a small island in the modern day Bahamas and naming it San Salvador. Engraving by George S Lang, based on a work by artist John James Barralet (c1747 - 1815).
