Description
Portrait photo circa 1893 by Place & Coover of William Aeko. Aeko, a native of Honolulu, was a ukulele player and singer around the turn of the 20th century who helped to spread Hawaiian culture. He was one of the musicians who took part in the earliest known commercial mainland performance of Hawaiian music with the ukulele at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago (also known as The Chicago World's Fair). Aeko was one of a quartet of vocalists dubbed the Volcano Singers who accompanied themselves with Spanish guitars, five-string taropatch and ukulele as part of "The Kilauea Cyclorama" - so-called because it featured a re-creation of the Kilauea Crater in the Hawaiian islands. The ukulele, which roughly translates as "Jumping Flea", originated in the 19th century as a Hawaiian interpretation of a small guitar-like instrument brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants.

Description
Audience of adults and children watch street performers during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, billed as the largest arts festival in the world. Edinburgh's population doubles during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which takes place every August. Here, an acrobat holds another man above his head. Other photos of these two acrobats available in this series. Edinburgh, Scotland, UK 2007. Interesting fact: The regularly-shaped paving stones (a.k.a Belgian Block) are often mistaken for cobblestones (which, in contrast, are left in their natural irregular shape).
