PERSIAN GULF -- 25 Mar 1996 -- Two F/A-18C Hornets from the "Wildcats" of Strike Fighter Squadron One Three One (VFA-131) patrol the skies over the Arabian Gulf. VFA 131 is part of Carrier Air Wing Seven (CVW-7), currently embarked on board the US Navy's nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73). The George Washington is presently deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of UN-led sanctions against Iraq, under Operation Southern Watch. Description
This was the Phantom display aircraft of 1992. The Cold war was over, as was the first Gulf war, and the RAF's F-4's were about to be retired. This aircraft was allocated to 74 Sqn, but also wore 56 Sqn marks (sort of) at the front.
