Description
Vintage photo circa 1923 of a man at work in an unidentified coal mine in the USA. The miner appears to be using his pickaxe to test the strength of the shaft roof following a cave-in which has left a gaping hole in the tunnel ceiling and debris scattered on the floor below. Picture by the National Photo Company.

Description
Vintage photo circa October 1908 of boys working in a coal mine in West Virginia, USA. The youths, who are leading a horse, were working on the "tipple" - the area of the mine where mine cars were tipped and emptied of their coal. The image was captured by sociologist and photographer Lewis Wickes Hine (1874 - 1940) - Hine spent a number of years documenting child labor in American industry for the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). His photographs helped change child labor laws in the US.

Description
South Durham miners or pit-men at work at the coal face. On the floor, centre left, is a Clanny safety lamp which had a thick glass round the flame, while on the right the miner is holding up a Davy lamp which had wire gauze round the flame. On the right the boy with a pit pony is waiting for the miners to fill the wagon with coal so that he can hitch up the pony which will drag the wagon along the rails to the bottom of the pit shaft. Engraving from The Graphic (London, 28 January 1871).
