    Description
Image taken by Soho (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) on May 15 2001 of an extensive erupting solar prominence on the surface of the sun. Prominences are huge clouds of relatively cool dense plasma suspended in the Sun's hot, thin corona and at times they can erupt, escaping the Sun's atmosphere. The upper chromosphere in this image is at a temperature of about 60,000 degrees K - the hottest areas appear almost white while the darker red areas indicate cooler temperatures. Soho is an international collaboration between NASA and ESA to study the Sun from its deep core to the outer corona and the solar wind.
