Mississippi river flood floods flooding NASA image May 2002
    Description
This NASA image taken on May 18 2002 shows the severe flooding which occurred in the Midwestern US after heavy rains in mid May caused the Mississippi (snaking down from the top left) to rise by up to 12 feet around its junction with the Ohio River tributary (snaking down from top right). The blackish red areas depict surface water and the "bulges" to the south of where the two rivers meet (just below the centre of the image) show the severe flooding that cost eight lives and left many homeless. See FOT515932 for pre-flood NASA image.
