Description
Engraving print depicting emotional scenes during the departure of the Pilgrim Fathers for America in 1620. The Pilgrims, English religious Separatists, set sail from Southampton, England, on the Mayflower in September 1620. A total of 102 passengers and a crew of around 30 made the Atlantic crossing and in March 1621 the passengers moved ashore and settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Engraving by John Burnet, based on a painting circa 1847 by Charles Lucy.
Before the opening of the Post Office Tower in 1964, regional television programmes were switched from a control centre in a converted office building with this mast on the roof. This shot was taken in 1960.
