Roentgen produced and detected electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength range now known as x-rays, or Rontgen rays, in 1895 and later produced the world's first x-ray photographs. Contemporary lithograph print depicting the inauguration of the Great Exhibition of 1851 - also known as the Crystal Palace Exhibition. The Exhibition took place in Hyde Park in London from May 1 to October 15 1851 and had the full title of "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations". It was the largest trade show the world had ever seen, spanned 19 acres and had 100,000 exhibits. The Exhibition was organised by Prince Albert (Queen Victoria's consort) and members of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce as a celebration of modern industrial technology and design. The massive Crystal Palace was specially designed by Joseph Paxton to house the show and was constructed from cast iron frame components and glass. The Exhibition was opened amid great ceremony by Queen Victoria and subsequently attracted six million visitors, including numerous famous people such as Charles Darwin.
