Description
Contemporary World War One illustration of a cavalry charge by British troops in France. At the beginning of WW1 all of the combatant armies still retained substantial numbers of cavalry and there were a number of traditional cavalry actions in the opening battles of the conflict. Later, as the front lines stabilised, a combination of barbed wire, machine guns and rapid fire rifles proved deadly to mounted troops and horse cavalry units tended to be converted to infantry. By the end of the war cavalry had virtually no useful role left to play - the days of cavalry warfare had effectively been consigned to the history books. The image appeared in The War Illustrated periodical in May 1917. The artist was Stanley L Wood (1866 – 1928).

Description
Photo taken 1905 showing three Native American Indians on horseback. The image, entitled "Sioux Chiefs", was captured by Edward S Curtis (1868 - 1952) as part of his project "The North American Indian". Curtis took thousands of pictures of over 80 Indian tribes to be published in 20 volumes from 1907 - 1930 with the aim of documenting as much Native American Indian traditional life as possible before that way of life disappeared. Much of the material he obtained is the only recorded history of those times. This particular image appeared in Volume 3 in 1908. The Sioux today are scattered across various reservations, communities and reserves in the Dakotas, Montana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Manitoba and souther Saskatchewan in Canada.
