UK SCOTLAND Stornoway -- 05 Nov 2010 -- The UK-registered MV RED DUCHESS pictured in the Port of Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. This vessel was rescued by the Coastguard and Maritime Agency tug boat ANGLIAN PRINCE after it broke down in rough seas on Tuesday last week ( 02 Nov 2010 ) off the Isle of Rum and was brought into the Port of Stornoway on Wednesday. Carrying a cargo of coal and loaded with bunker fuel, the rescue of the RED DUCHESS by the ANGLIAN PRINCE further highlights the dangers to shipping and the possible environmental cost to the coasts of the Outer and Inner Hebrides if these tugs are cut - as they have been earmarked for by government cutbacks. Coastal-based tugs like the ANGLIAN PRINCE (which also helped to rescue HMS Astute the week previously) play a crucial role in preventing shipping disasters and loss of life. With many tankers and other environmentally hazardous cargos passing through the seas of the British Isles, many see the government's decision as foolhardy. The four tugs were brought into service after recommendations by an inquiry led by Lord Donaldson in the wake of the BRAER disaster off the Shetland Isles in 1993 -- Picture by Jonathan Mitchell | Lightroom Photos
