Peter Bassett Hill Top Dome at Sacramento Peak Observatory New Mexico, Solar Observatory Physics Sun Sunspot Sunspots, Astrophysics
Description
This picture shows the Hilltop Dome, which sits near the top of the hill. As with the Evans Solar Facility, the roof of the building (with the doors in it) can rotate around to allow the telescope to see the Sun anywhere in the sky. This telescope is used for taking patrol images of the whole Sun. Such images are taken for discovering when something interesting is happening on the Sun, such as a solar flare, and to have a record of what the Sun looks like every day. One of the patrol tasks of the Hilltop Dome is to film the Sun all the time. This image is stored regularly for later study, and is also fed into the local TV system, so everybody who lives in Sunspot (the village that is Sacramento Peak Observatory) can see what the Sun looks like on his or her own TV set. This image is also on display on one of the monitors just inside the entrance to the Vacuum Tower. The Hilltop Dome was completed in 1963. It is not open to the public.

Infrared telescope. The Astrophysical Research Consortium infrared telescope at New Mexico, USA. This reflecting telescope uses a 3.5 metre diam- eter mirror to focus the signal, giving a sharper image than a lens. The detector picks up infrared radiation, which scatters less than visible light and extends the telescope's view. The telescope is operated almost exclusively by remote control, allowing different observers based across the USA to share the facility on any given night. It is located at Apache Point, on the summit of a mountain in southern New Mexico.

The Clarke Telescope Dome. The Observatory's original 24-inch (0.61 m) Alvan Clark Telescope is still in use today for public education. Lowell Observatory hosts 70,000 visitors per year at their Steele Visitors Center who take guided daytime tours and view various wonders of the night sky through the Clark Telescope and other telescopes. It was founded in 1894 by astronomer Percival Lowell, and run for a time by his third cousin Guy Lowell of Boston's well-known Lowell family. The current trustee of Lowell Observatory is William Lowell Putnam, grandnephew of founder Percival Lowell and son of long-time trustee Roger Putnam.

This telescope has been a landmark in since 1973, and is easily visible from many points in Tucson. The 4-m is the largest optical telescope on Kitt Peak, and receives 4 times more requests for use than there are clear nights each year. From the Visitor Gallery you have a beautiful 360 degree view of Kitt Peak and surrounding landscape.

Hale studied physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and while still an undergraduate he invented the spectroheliograph. This instrument is capable of photographing the sun at precise wavelengths and is now a basic tool of solar astronomy. From this interest he formed the Mt Wilson Observatory site. He studied sunspots there and discovered that they possess strong magnetic fields the polarity of which reverse on a 22 year cycle. Hale spent a lot of time persuading various bodies to fund the building of larger telescopes, including the 200 inch Mount Palomar reflector, the second largest telescope in the world.
