In the mid-1860's whilst working for a London firm of architects, Thomas Hardy, the great novelist and poet, was in charge of the excavation of human remains and the dismantling of tombs in the St Pancras churchyard. The tombs were removed in the course of the construction of a new London terminus for Midland Railways. They were relocated around an ash tree, today known as the "Hardy tree".
