    Needles Highway (SD Highway 87 between Sylvan Lake and Legion Lake ) is located in Custer State Park in the Black Hills of western South Dakota.The 14-mile scenic highway winds through pine, spruce and aspen forest under a vista of granite spires called "the Needles." The route snakes through several small granite tunnels and past Sylvan Lake , featured in the 2007 movie "National Treasure: Book of Secrets." The "Needles" area is popular with rock climbers, outdoor enthusiasts, sightseers and motorcycle enthusiasts. The drive is winding and slow speeds are recommended; visitors should allow 45 minutes to an hour to safely enjoy the views. The Needles Highway is a 14-mile drive through granite outcroppings. The drive features spectacular scenery with great views of Custer City, the Needles, Cathedral Spires, and the Needle's Eye. The Iron Mountain Road is the most scenic route to Mount Rushmore and connects Mount Rushmore with Custer State Park.
