Arctic terns have one of the longest migration distances, around 44,000 miles per year. They have a length of 33?39 cm and a wingspan of 76?85 cm. Arctic Terns are long-lived birds, up to 30 years. They eat mainly fish and small marine invertebrates. A coastal bird known as the sea swallow
Arctic Tern (Sterna paradisaea) hovering above a nesting area on Inner Farne off the Northumberland coast. Photographed from a distance with a long lens the nest is not visible in the vegetation but tern nests are generally placed in small depressions on the ground. The nests are potentially vulnerable to predators consequently the Arctic Tern is quite an aggressive bird during the nesting season and will vigorously defend its nest by swooping and pecking at any intruder.
