Description
Soldiers of “D” Battalion, 116th Anti-Aircraft Gun Battery, Beach Lawns, 1944. These US soldiers came over from America to Carrick Fergus in Ireland on the RMS Queen Elizabeth. After a few weeks training they then travelled to Weston, arriving on 7 December 1943, the first of many. Battalion Headquarters was the commandeered Severn Croft Hotel on Beach Road. That Christmas the men held a “cash and candy” drive, pooling rations and raising enough money to buy fifty toys and a Santa Claus suit. On Christmas morning Santa climbed into a Jeep and delivered the toys and sweets to local war orphans. In the New Year they held training exercises and prepared equipment for the sea crossing to come. On 17 May, the full battalion left secretly at night. They headed for the mustering areas on the South Coast, and landed on Utah beach in Normandy on 6 June 1944. Front centre is Cpl. Francis Morris. The battalion commanders were Colonel Paul Morris and Colonel James Shearhouse.
