NEPAL Mount Everest -- Sep 2007 -- The summit of Mount Everest is visible in this telephoto image. This image is from the WSW side of the mountain from several miles away. Despite several attempts, the summit was not reached until May 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. This image show part of the northern face where Mallory and Irving died during their summit attempt in the 1920s.
