UK SCOTLAND Butt of Lewis -- 07 Nov 2010 -- A scenic time exposure of the cliffs beneath the lighthouse at the Butt of Lewis on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. The UK is being battered by severe hurricane-force winds reaching gusts of 65mph (105kmh) today (Monday) and weather forecasters expect conditions to worsen in the next 48-72 hours. The severe weather has affected ferry services and transport across the United Kingdom and severe weather warnings are in place across much of the western areas of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales -- Picture by Jonathan Mitchell | Lightroom Photos
Very small figures at the base of the cliff show the scale. The rocks are slates - locally known as killas. Slate is a metamorphosed sedimentary rock and in this instance has been folded and crumpled by enormous pressures.
