NEPAL Kathmandu -- 29 Aug 2009 -- Market traders in the Asan Bazaar area of Kathmandu, Nepal. World leaders announced at the UN in New York in late September, a health plan for women and children across several of the world's poorest nations - mostly in Africa, though including Nepal. This aid plan is to provide free health care for millions of women and children. Many Nepalis have little or no access to health services, particularly in remote rural areas, days or weeks from the nearest road. This makes health services are hard to deliver in Nepal. In the city, health services are easier to access, though many suffer through poverty -- Picture by Jon Mitchell / Lightroom Photos
NEPAL Kathmandu -- 02 Sep 2009 -- A Nepalese woman sells vegetables and spices in the Ason Bazaar area of Kathmandu, Nepal. According to tests commissioned by the local English-language weekly, The Nepali Times, many of these vegetables are contaminated with very high and dangerous levels of pesticides, many of which are banned elsewhere. Indian traders bring in banned and illegal pesticides and sell them to unsuspecting and often illiterate farmers in the Terai plains. Often these farmers throw on whatever quanitity is needed to make the produce look good. Post-harvest doctoring of food is also widespread (furniture polish on aubourgines!) and there is no effective food standards agency in Nepal. Some traders inject dirty water or chemicals into fruit and veg to make them last longer in the market or simply look better. Chemcials found in the lab tests on vegetables like these showed high levels of dioxins and even DDT (which is banned worldwide). Other vegetables are completely organic, making for a chemcial lucky dip when buying fruit and veg. As many Nepalese people eat plenty of vegetables in their daily diet of Dhal Bhat, it is likely there will be an increase in diseases related to pesticide poisoning and already it appears that these harmful chemicals are causing deformations in some new born babies here -- Picture by Jonathan Mitchell
