The cargo ship Athina B beached to the east of the Palace Pier, Brighton on 21 January 1980. It was a temporary tourist attraction with a large number of sightseers. Generator and engine problems caused her to drift. Four attempts were needed to rescue all those on board. The ship drifted eastwards and eventually ran aground. The ship remained on the beach for a month, before she was eventually refloated and towed to a scrapyard at Rainham, Essex on 21 February 1980, where she was scrapped.
