    Description
The Mercado dos Lavradores, Funchal, Madeira. A view along the upper level above the courtyard, with fruit and vegetable stalls displaying a dazzling variety of exotic produce. The Mercado dos Lavradores (The Farmer’s Market), Funchal’s main Market, was designed in the 1930’s by Edmundo Tavares, a famous Portuguese architect. The Art Deco building, faced with yellow tiles (azulejos), houses a large fish Market in the basement, with the inevitable arrays of Atlantic Scabbard fish, a courtyard area surrounded by colourful flower, exotic fruit, and vegetable stalls on two levels, and many other butchers, bakers, furniture and craft stalls and cafés. Turn up early for the best display of fish. More descriptive information is available on Madeira (general), specific locations, Gardens, Markets, Levadas, specific Levadas, Bananas, and specific plants. Please ask.
