Estimated To Be Between 800 And 1000 Years Old, Legend Has It That Robin Hood And His Gang Of Outlaws Hid Inside The Hollow Trunk To Evade The Sheriff Of Nottingham's Men. It Weighs Around 23 Tons And Is 52ft High, Has A Girth Of Over Ten Metres (33ft) And A Spread Of 28 Metres (92ft), Making It The Biggest Oak Tree In England. The Major Oak Is A Quercus Robur, An English Or Pedunculate Oak, But Despite The Robin Hood Legend Would Only Have Been An Acorn At The Time The Outlaw Was Around. Today It Needs The Help Of Artificial Supports To Prevent It Collapsing Under Its Own Immense Weight.
