Walking race in progress along Cowdray Avenue, the A12 Colchester By-pass as it was then. As can be seen, the road was not closed to traffic for the event, which took place over a substantial section of this road. The A12 now goes to the north of the town on a near motorway standard dual carriageway. Despite this, Cowdray Avenue is now much busier with traffic than when this event took place in the 1960s.
