Description
This quiet village twelve miles outside Aberystwyth is famous for its waterfalls and three stacked bridges. The three bridges over the River Mynach at Devil's Bridge. In Welsh, the village is known as Pontarfynach - 'The bridge over the Mynach river'. The three bridges are quite a spectacular sight being stacked on top of each other. According to legend, the lowest bridge was built by the Devil himself to let a local woman rescue her cow which had somehow got to the other side of the gorge. Expecting the woman to walk across to get it, his one condition was that he received the soul of the first living creature to cross the bridge. However, he was tricked by the lady who got her pet dog to run across first - thus leaving the Devil with a soul of a dog! More conventional wisdom says that it's in fact an 11th Century bridge built by the monks of Strata Florida.

Devil's Bridge (Pontarfynach), Redigion is situated high in the foothills of the Pumlumon mountain range twelve miles east of Aberystwyth. The River Rheidol is joined by the River Mynach, plunging 400 foot / 122m down the Mynach Falls. The village's most famous feature is probably the unique arrangement of its three bridges - which are built one on top of the other, across the River Mynach. There is a story that the first bridge was built by the Devil to enable an old woman to cross to rescue her cow. In reality, it is likely that the Abbott of the Cistercian Strata Florida Abbey had the first bridge built so that the monks could reach the sheep pastures to the north. The latest bridge was built by the County Council during the 20th century.
