Description
the Old Bridge was until 1218 the only bridge across the Arno in Florence. The current bridge was rebuilt after a flood in 1345.When the Medici moved from Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti, they decided they needed a connecting route from the Uffizi to the Palazzo Pitti on the other side of the Arno that would enable them to keep out of contact with the people they ruled. There have been stores on the Ponte Vecchio since the 13th century
The Ponte Vecchio ("Old Bridge" is a Medieval stone closed-spandrel segmental arch bridge over the Arno River, in Florence, Italy, noted for still having shops built along it, as was once common. Butchers initially occupied the shops; the present tenants are jewellers, art dealers and souvenir sellers
The Ponte Vecchio spanning the Arno in Florence (Firenze). The upper windows line a covered walkway between the Palazzo Uffizi and Palazzo Pitti. At Street level the bridge is lined with shops and arches looking over the Arno.
