The Lion was named after a village in Afghanistan Maiwand and was built to commemorate the deaths of 329 men from the 66th Berkshire Regiment in the Battle of Maiwand. Only 11 men of the regiment survived the battle. It is known locally as the Forbury Lion. The sculptor was George Blackall Simonds. Rudyard Kipling wrote the poem "That day" in commemoration.. An' there Ain't no chorus 'ere to give, Nor there Ain't no band to play; But I wish I was dead 'fore I done what I did, Or seen what I seed that day!
