Portrait engraving circa 1849 of legendary English poet and playwright William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616), author of plays such as Hamlet, Macbeth and King Lear. The engraving by Samuel Cousins (1801 - 1887) is based on the famous "Chandos" portrait which is believed to have been painted from life between 1600 and 1610. It is named after James Brydges, 3rd Duke of Chandos, who was an early owner of the portrait, but it is not clear who painted it or even if it is definitely Shakespeare. Experts believe however that it does indeed depict the Bard.

Scanned directly from an original Victorian print dated March 22, 1884. This engraving shows Alfred Lord Tennyson, the poet laureate, in his study on the Isle of Wight. From a series of prints entitled 'Celebrities of the day'. Alfred Tennyson was born in Somersby, Lincolnshire in 1809. He began writing as a child and published some of his best-known poems when he was only twenty. TS Eliot called him "the great master of melancholia". He was made a peer in 1884 and died in 1892.
