The engraving by Samuel Cousins (1801 - 1887) is based on the famous "Chandos" portrait which is believed to have been painted from life between 1600 and 1610. It is named after James Brydges, 3rd Duke of Chandos, who was an early owner of the portrait, but it is not clear who painted it or even if it is definitely Shakespeare. Experts believe however that it does indeed depict the Bard.

Dr Samuel Johnson was born in Lichfield in 1709. The statue was presented to the citizens by James Thomas Law (Chancellor of the Diocese) in 1838 and to commemorate the 200 anniversary of Johnson's death in 1984 the Johnson society added an epitath "Every man has a lurking wish to appear considerable in his native place"

This Grade I listed building, which is now a museum, stands on the corner of Breadmarket Street and Market Street and overlooks the Market Square. According to legend he nailed The Ninety-Five Theses, outlining his issues with certain practices of the Roman Catholic clergy, to the door at the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, on October 31 1517. Historians question whether this incident ever actually happened but Luther's refusal to retract his writings resulted in his excommunication by Pope leo X in 1521. Portrait print, based on a painting by John Singleton Copley, of John Adams during his time as the first US Vice-President. Adams (1735 – 1826) held the office from 1789 to 1797 and subsequently became the second US President (1797 – 1801). He is regarded as one of the most influential Founding Fathers.
