Alfred's Tower is a triangular folly tower. It stands 160 feet high of brick, with a view over Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset. Designed in 1765, it was completed in 1772 to commemorate the spot where Alfred the Great in AD 870 erected his standard against Danish invaders and who eventually defeated the Vikings.
