Description
Constructed by Robert Stephenson, son of "Rocket" creator, George Stephenson. Begun in 1846, the bridge was opened on 5 March 1850. For its time, it was a bridge of "magnitude and singular novelty", far surpassing in length contemporary cast beam or plate girder iron bridges. One aspect of its method of construction was also novel; the box sections were assembled on-shore, then floated out into position before being lifted into place. During the evening of 23 May 1970 the bridge was greatly damaged when boys playing on the bridge dropped a burning torch, starting a fire (see Britannia Bridge Official Fire Report, BBC News video). As a consequence the bridge was completely rebuilt and reopened in 1972 with the spans supported by archways. The deck has two levels: the lower still carries the rail line, and the upper supports a single-carriageway section of the A55 road. The new bridge was designed by Husband & Co., now part of Mott MacDonald

View c. 1880 of Menai Suspension Bridge over the Menai Strait in its original form with a wooden road surface linking the Isle of Anglesey with mainland Wales near Bangor, Gwynd. Designed by Thomas Telford it was one of the world's first suspension bridges. Work started in 1819 on the masonry limestone towers and it was opened to horse-drawn road traffic in 1826. Wrought iron chain cables linked the 176m (577 ft) span. The road surface was replaced with a steel deck in 1893. The original chains were replaced with steel ones in 1938-9 (note that the the centre two original cables were dispensed with leaving the two outer replacement cables to support the roadway). The Clifton Suspension Bridge, spanning the Avon Gorge, is the symbol of the city of Bristol. For almost 150 years this Grade I listed structure has attracted visitors from all over the world. Its story began in 1754 with the dream of a Bristol wine merchant who left a legacy to build a bridge over the Gorge. The first competition in 1829 was judged by Thomas Telford, the leading civil engineer of the day. Telford rejected all the designs and submitted his own but the decision to declare him the winner was unpopular and a second competition was held in 1830. 24 year old Isambard Kingdom Brunel was eventually declared the winner and appointed project engineer – his first major commission. The foundation stone was laid in 1831 but the project was dogged with political and financial difficulties and by 1843, with only the towers completed, the project was abandoned. Brunel died prematurely aged 53 yrs in 1859 but the Bridge was completed as his memorial and finally opened in 1864. Designed in the early 19th century for light horse drawn traffic it still meets the demands of 21st century commuter traffic with 11-12, 000 motor vehicles crossing it every day.

Description
The Millennium Bridge, officially known as the London Millennium Footbridge, is a steel suspension bridge for pedestrians crossing the River Thames in London, England, linking Bankside with the City. It is located between Southwark Bridge (downstream) and Blackfriars Railway Bridge (upstream). The bridge is owned and maintained by the Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation. Construction of the bridge began in 1998, with the opening on 10 June 2000. Londoners nicknamed the bridge the "Wobbly Bridge" after participants in a charity walk on behalf of Save the Children to open the bridge felt an unexpected, and, for some, uncomfortable, swaying motion on the first two days after the bridge opened. The bridge was closed later that day, and after two days of limited access the bridge was closed for almost two years while modifications were made to eliminate the wobble entirely. It was reopened in 2002.

View c. 1880 of the Britannia Bridge over the Menai Strait in its original rectangular tubular wrought iron box section form linking the Isle of Anglesey with mainland Wales near Bangor, Gwynd. Designed by George Stephenson work started in 1846 on the masonry piers with George's son Robert as Chief engineer on the project and it was opened to rail traffic in 1850. Carved into the stonework on the nearest pier above the railway portals is: Erected In Anno Domini MDCCCCI, Engineer Robert Stephenson. In 1970 fire badly damaged the bridge and it was rebuilt with steel truss arches linking the original piers. In 1980 an upper road deck for the A55/A5 routes was added to the single rail track.
