NEPAL Khumjung -- A Sherpa Tibetan Buddhist spins prayer wheels at a chorten (stupa) in Khumjung a village of the Khumbu Himal (Everest region) of Nepal. Spinning these prayer wheels with their mantra of Ou Mani Padme Oum (which loosely translates as - How beautiful is the heart of the lotus!) is regarded as a pious act by Tibetan Buddhists -- Picture by Jon Mitchell / Lightroom Photos
NEPAL Tengboche -- Aug 2007 -- Tengboche Monastery is a popular attraction of the Khumbu region and is usually quieter in the Monsoon months, as monks retreat into meditation. Sometimes, females are not allowed into the monastery during meditation periods in August. It is still open through most of this season though and usually a monk will glady show you around. Trekking the Everest region in the Monsoon months is becoming increasingly popular for some. While the views are not so spectacular as in the main seasons, the elusive, cloudy landscapes are enchanting. The Monsoon reveals a different side of the Everest region, with bright displays of flowers and less trekkers, allowing for a different trek to the usual one -- Picture by Jon Mitchell / Lightroom Photos

Tibetans have brought not only their carpets into Nepal, but their carpet making skills as well. The Tibetan Refugee Camp near Patan is now the center of almost all Tibetan carpet making worldwide.

Description
One of the striking features of Tibetan monk debates is that they are quite physical. They are marked by emphatic gestures such as the loud clapping of hands used by the questioner to punctuate each question. These gestures have great symbolic value though debaters are rarely aware of such symbolic meanings, at the time. For them, the clapping and gestures bring them a clarity that can help mobilize the intellectual capacities of the debaters and capture the attention of the audience.

NEPAL Kathmandu -- 24 Dec 2008 -- Tibetan Buddhist refugees preambulate the great stupa at Boudha in Kathmandu, Nepal. Many of these Tibetans escaped Tibet when the country was invaded by the Chinese in 1951, with many departing in 1959. Buddhist monasteries are scattered all around and a large Tibetan community resides in the Bodnath area, who make their daily "kora" circling the stupa, twirling prayer wheels as they pass. UNESCO has declared Bodnath a World Heritage Site.
NEPAL Everest Base Camp -- 16 Apr 2005 -- A view looking south of the massive Khumbu Glacier, just south of Everest Base Camp. Like on many of the world's glaciers, here on the main Khumbu Glacier, extensive melting is evident. Scientists have warned that rising temperatures from global warming may cause the demise of these Himalayan ice falls and glaciers - some already melting fast. The effects of this are likely to affect many Asian nations, as these glaciers - and those in neighbouring Tibet - feed most of the large river systems from Pakistan to China. Widespread flooding has began and is expected to continue. In the 2004 Monsoon, some 30 million people in Nepal, India and Bangladesh were affected by serious flooding. Scientists add that after the glaciers have melted, their departure will lead to widespread drought across many areas of Asia. Glaciers are melting all over the world, here in the high Himalaya, on average, glaciers are receeding by around 15m + per year, a statistic which increases as the temperature rises -- Picture
