RHODESIA -- c.1968 -- Rhodesian Army soldiers practice an unusual infantry technique with .303 Lee Enfield rifles in the bush somewhere in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). The Rhodesian Bush War or Zimbabwean War of Independence lasted almost 15 years and was one of the conflicts in which the Cold War was played out between the West and the Communist Bloc in Africa. The conflict began in 1964 and ended in 1980 with Independence. Aside from thousands of military casualties, the war took a heavy toll on the country's civilians too, who were often targeted by ruthless rebels, backed by the Soviet Union. Although universal sufferage was introduced, like many African nations, the post-independence period was marred by a slide into dictatorship and corruption -- Picture by Lightroom Photos
