Description
Guildhall and St John the Baptist Church, Thaxted, north Essex. It has been thought for many years that the Guildhall was built by the Guild of Cutlers in 1390 and used as their headquarters until the mid-16th century. This is now disputed, with a date around eighty years later being suggested by certain evidence. For some 200 years, the building was used as a grammar school. It is now owned by by Essex County Council, being used by the parish council and for community events, fairs and exhibitions. The Guildhall is open to the public on weekends and bank holidays during the summer.
