This locomotive was designed by O.V.S. Bulleid and built in 1947 in Brighton. Named after the famous wartime airfield at Tangmere, locomotives of this class became known as 'Battle of Britain' class and were used on mainline duties until the end of steam in the south of England in 1967. 'Tangmere' is one of the few preserved locomotives still retaining its original streamlining. Since restoration the locomotive has hauled many charter trains on the mainline.
