Clifton Suspension Bridge above the Avon Gorge, Bristol, under construction in c.1863. The bridge was designed by Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and work began in 1831 on the twin towers. Money problems meant that by 1843 only the stone towers were in place. After Brunel's death in 1859 the plans were revised. In 1863 wooden scaffolding was erected and a wire rope and timber footway was strung between the towers. This enabled the wrought iron supporting chains to be assembled. These chains were originally used on Brunel's Hungerford Suspension Bridge across the Thames at Charing Cross, London. Clifton opened to traffic in 1864. An early sepia photograph from M&N Publishing.
