The Llangollen Canal is one of the canals of the United Kingdom, spanning the border between in England and Wales. What is today known as the Llangollen Canal was originally the centre section of the Ellesmere Canal, and later became part of the Shropshire Union Canal network. Only with the increasing popularity of pleasure boats was it renamed the Llangollen Canal in an effort to attract more visitors. Today, the canal links Llangollen in Denbighshire, north Wales, with Hurleston in south Cheshire, via the town of Ellesmere, Shropshire. In 2009 the eleven-mile section of the canal from Gledrid Bridge near Rhoswiel (half-a-mile inside England) through to the Horseshoe Falls, which includes Chirk Aqueduct and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, was declared by UNESCO to be a World Heritage site.

The 1,000 foot long Pontcysyllte Aqueduct near Llangollen in north Wales is the oldest operational cast iron aqueduct in the world. Built by Thomas Telford, it was opened in 1805 - the year Nelson won the Battle of Trafalgar. Telford built Pontcysyllte Aqueduct near Llangollen in 1795 and the structure continues to represent a masterpiece of Georgian engineering. Taking 10 years to build, the first stone was laid on 25th July 1795. To Telford's credit, just one life was lost during the construction which, for that time, was as impressive as the engineering feat itself. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct takes its name from a triple arched bridge a little further up the river and, literally translated, means 'the bridge that connects the river'. Described by the novelist Sir Walter Scott, as the finest work of art he had ever seen, the aqueduct carries the Llangollen canal on 19 slender arches, 126 feet above the Dee Valley.
