Description
Crail Harbour on the East Coast of Scotland between St Andrews and Kirkcaldy. The curved breakwater on the right dates back to the 16th century, whilst the straight pier on the left was built in 1826 by Robert Stevenson. The village is famous for its shellfish. The parish church dates back to 1160, and The Marketgate was once the largest medieval Market place in Europe. The beach to the left of the tiny harbour is a geologists’ paradise, being strewn with huge fossilised tree stumps, and the low cliffs are also a source of Carboniferous fossils.
