NEPAL Kathmandu -- Sep 2009 -- Street scene in the Ason Bazaar area of Kathmandu, Nepal. All manner of goods can be found in the bazaar's alleyways and byways. In the foreground, vegetables are on sale, which a recent lab test by local English-language newspaper the Nepali Times found extremely high and dangerous levels of pesticides in many fruits and vegetables on sale in this bazaar. Among these were found DDT and other banned pesticides sold into the Terai region by unscrupulous Indian traders. Post harvest doctoring of fruit and vegetables is also widespread, bananas are often injected with dirty water to make them yellow and aubourgines are buffed up with furniture polish!
