Description
The Old Houses of Parliament seen from the River Thames at the time of King Charles II. The building was burned down in 1834. It was in the vaults of this building that the Gunpowder Plot of 1604 was foiled when the plotters were discovered during a search instigated by an anonymous letter. This reproduction is from a book published in 1840.

Corn Laws were introduced in 1815 to protect the British farmer from foreign competition. The ensuing inflated price of wheat and subsequent high price of bread caused great hardship amongst the poor. Finally repealed in 1846.Illustration by Robert Seymour (1800-1836). Lithograph.
